Mountain Biking in the Hidden Valley Recreation Area

Ely, Minnesota isn’t just for hikers; it’s also home to a couple of the best bike trails. Hidden Valley Recreation Area, located just two miles east of the downtown area, has quickly become the heart of local mountain biking. With over nine miles of scenic singletrack and plans to expand even further, it’s the perfect place for riders of all levels to experience Minnesota’s great outdoors.

Hidden Valley Recreation Area is maintained by the Ely Nordic Ski & Bike Club, a local nonprofit that works year-round to keep the trails in excellent condition. This forested park features rolling hills, rocky terrain, and well-drained soil, making it ideal for biking year-round.

Phase One of the mountain bike system was completed in 2022, adding more than 8 miles of purpose-built, directional singletrack. Each trail loop is designed to offer a unique ride experience, from beginner-friendly paths to more technical challenges for advanced riders. A skills loop near the trailhead helps riders warm up or practice before heading out on the main trails.

In the coming years, Phase Two will add more trails connecting Hidden Valley to other areas around Ely, making this growing network one of the top mountain biking trails in Minnesota.

About the Hidden Valley Recreation Area

Biking in the Warmer Months

The Hidden Valley mountain bike trails offer smooth flow, tight turns, and gradual climbs through pine forests and rocky outcrops. Loops A through E total more than nine miles, giving riders a range of options for quick spins or half-day rides. Signs clearly mark difficulty levels, and e-bikes are allowed on the trails.

Riders can expect a mix of dirt and gravel surfaces, wooden bridges, and open stretches with views of the forest canopy. The area is free to use, open to the public, and located just minutes from Ely’s shops and restaurants, which makes it easy to plan a full day outdoors.

Fat Biking in the Winter

During winter, the trails at Hidden Valley are groomed for fat biking and snowshoeing. The wide tires of a fat bike glide smoothly over packed snow, turning Ely’s cold season into a fun new adventure.

At Northernair Lodge, guests can also enjoy fat tire bikes for use only on the property. These bikes are perfect for exploring the resort grounds and nearby paths, whether you’re cruising on dirt roads or testing out a snow-packed trail. A few bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and it's a fun way to get outside between trail rides.

What to Bring for Mountain Biking

A little preparation goes a long way when you’re riding the trails around Ely. Here’s what to pack for a great day on the bike:

  • Helmet, pads, and gloves: Always wear a helmet and bring padded gloves for grip and comfort. If you plan to go fast or do stunts, knee and elbow pads will be your friend if you wipe out.
  • Water and snacks: Bring a refillable bottle or hydration pack and energy bars for longer rides.
  • Bug spray and sunscreen: Northern Minnesota’s forests are beautiful in the summer, but you’ll need to protect yourself from the sun and bugs.
  • Basic repair kit: A small pump, tire levers, and a multi-tool can help with quick fixes on the trail.
  • Trail map or app: Download a map from the Ely Nordic Ski & Bike Club website or use a trail app to stay oriented.

Once you have all your gear, you are ready to head out! The only thing left to plan is where to stay
